PIVEX
28.09.1995 to 28.9.2000 in Brno
In the Czech Republic, there is held a great number of various beer festivals, and the like, at which larger amount of beer is consumed.
The Czech Association of Breweries and Hop-Growers and the Czech Association of Small Independent Breweries had to decide which degustation competition will be declared as the official one.
The PIVEX fair in Brno was chosen, because it is the most prestigious national venture. The whole competition was organized by the two above mentioned associations in cooperation with the Research Institute for Brewing and Malting Industry in Prague and the Snip agency. Since 2001 this competition has been called ‘Czech Beer’.
The principle of the competition remains the same – it has two rounds, the first in autumn and the second in spring. The delegate of the competition comes to all breweries and collects samples. It is though not known to the brewery when the delegate will arrive and what samples he will choose. Thus the competition becomes utmost objective. It is therefore impossible that a single brewery prepare special beer for the competition. The degustation is fully anonymous. The samples are marked by numbers and the tasters, invited from among the chief brewers of individual breweries and experts from the research institute, do not know what kind of beer they are tasting. The order of the samples is decided by lots. The marks given range form one to nine and the highest and lowest marks are crossed out. The results are announced each year around 28th October, that means, at the st.Wenceslas beer feast.
The Bernard brand, gaining five PIEX Gold Cups, has become the absolutely most successful brand in the history of the only official degustation competition in the Czech Republic, approved by the Czech Association of Breweries and Hop-Growers and the Czech Association of Small Independent Breweries.
